Palazzo Gromo Losa

The Palazzo Gromo Losa Italian garden is the essence of the splendid historic palace acquired by the Cassa di Risparmio di Biella Foundation and completely restored to house cultural and social activities including “Selvatica – Arte e Natura in Festival”.
The garden was opened in 2012, together with the Palazzo, created with the help of a contribution by the Biellese sponsor Emanuele Rosa. It extends over roughly 5,500 square metres, but with the central courtyard, an oriental wooded area and a tree-covered slope it adds up to more than 11,800 square metres in all. It is a garden park inspired by the criteria of the garden “all'italiana”, designed by the landscape architect Ermanno Pozzi. The great lawn, already divided by an existing arbour, was cut into regular areas bordered by low box hedges where frothing jets ripple pools of water in the centre of each bed. Hedges of monochromatic roses ensure constant flowering from May to November.
A hornbeam tunnel encloses the northern side of the parterre as an invitation to take a pleasant stroll in the shade. The area is bordered by a parapet hedge to the south, accompanied by a row of Prunus subhirtella, which flowers in winter and early spring. An uneven row of Cornus florida has been planted on the slope below, while widely spaced Tuscan cypresses tower over the lower wall. The pre-existing trees have been left, particularly a monumental cherry which acts as shelter for numerous concerts during the cultural events which punctuate Palace life. The whole garden also communicates with the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Gromo Losa and the art works which are periodically housed there.
