History

Miradolo Castle stands in the Pinerolo area, at the entrance to the Chisone and Pellice Valleys. Since 2008 it has been home to the Cosso Foundation, which has been responsible for its restoration, transforming it into a cultural centre that conceives and organises exhibitions, concerts, and educational and training activities, in dialogue with the territory.
A park of over 6 hectares surrounds the ancient residence of the family Cacherano di Bricherasio: organised around an imposing central clearing, it is a splendid example of an English-style garden in which the sinuous lines of the contours, the patches of trees with their remarkable variety of textures, colours and shapes, and the presence of an ancient system of canals, are irrefutable signs of the Romantic style.
The park, designed by the great Prussian landscape architect Xavier Kurten, is home to majestic 100-year-old trees, including five monumental specimens, and a forest of giant bamboos. The most representative blooms are camellias and hydrangeas: both specimens introduced in the 19th century and young plants resulting from the restoration and enhancement project are preserved.
A vegetable garden of over 500 square metres was reborn in 2021 with the help of architect Pejrone. The vegetable garden is circular in shape: harmonious, enclosed, protected; it overlooks the rustic courtyard where the farmstead stands with its stable, hayloft, oven, chicken coop and wash house.
In 2024, the park was again renovated with the project ‘The Park of Miradolo Castle. Story of a rebirth', financed by the PNRR through the Ministry of Culture's call for proposals for historic parks and gardens. With the aim of implementing biodiversity and tourist attractiveness, several areas of the park, including the courtyard, the area in front of the Greenhouse and the undergrowth areas, have been redesigned, with the botanical collection being replenished and the old pottery restored.

The story of a rebirth

In 2007, after years of abandonment and neglect, the current owners entrusted the place to the Cosso Foundation, which initiated an intervention to secure and restore the park and the mansion, which had suffered great degradation after a long period of neglect and offense following the death of the last owner, Sofia Cacherano di Bricherasio.

Since then, the Cosso Foundation has been working to promote the beauty of nature and of this place and tell about it to visitors and schools, enhancing the existing while respecting historical memory. Archival research continues to unveil new stories, curiosities and valuable information about this magical place.

After more than 11 years of work, the Park has been reborn and still preserves, among many wonders, a forest of giant bamboos, remarkable specimens of hydrangeas, a collection of historic camellias, and a tree heritage of more than 1,700 specimens, including 6 monumental trees recognized in 2008 by the Piedmont Region.

5 souls for a unique story

The Cosso Foundation was born from an idea of Maria Luisa Cosso Eynard and her daughter Paola, who in 2008 realized their desire to transmit interest in culture, the territory in which one lives and self-realization. Thus the Castle of Miradolo and its Park, in San Secondo di Pinerolo (To), transformed over the years into a center of research and experimentation in the field of art, music and nature, becoming a reference for the area and for families and a point of tourist interest.

The numerous collaborations activated with schools, social cooperatives and day care centers are designed to promote the protection of beauty and to build together a new sense of responsibility and preservation of the common good.

For a family day out

The exhibitions organized by the Cosso Foundation are accompanied, in the rooms of the Castle, by the educational path From a meter down, inaugurated in 2018. Under the works, at child height, games, insights and stimuli become the way to approach art in an informal and personal way, even for adults. The Historical Park is also preparing to welcome the project From a meter down and is an open-air laboratory of learning thanks to thematic guided tours, sensory and psychomotor paths, also for the age group 1-3 years.
A seasonal audio narration on headphones accompanies the discovery of botanical curiosities.

Miradolo Castle is among the Family & Kids Friendly Museums of the Nati con la Cultura circuit.

Antica Pasticceria Castino

A pastry of the past, which will win you over with traditional sweet and savory delicacies, but also a new meeting point for an aperitif or a cocktail with friends, perhaps in the cool summer dehor, in one of the most scenic corners of the city.
It is in this bakery that the aristocracy of Pinerolo bought sweets for the holidays until the last century and met on Sunday after Mass celebrated in the Cathedral, right next door.
Even the Countess Sofia Cacherano di Bricherasio, last heir of the family and owner of the Castle of Miradolo, in San Secondo di Pinerolo, used to go to this ''sweet corner'', secluded under the elegant arcades of Piazza San Donato in Pinerolo, to enjoy a hot chocolate or a slice of the famous Zurich cake.
Yes ... because it is here that in the thirties of the twentieth century the pastry chef Giuseppe Castino earned great fame by developing the original recipe of the cake, designed by him for Princess Jolanda di Savoia.

The sought after liberty lounge, the scent of freshly baked pastries and the excellent sweet and savory selection will win you over!
