August in Gardens
Dear readers,
August at last! Holiday time. But not for 122 Great Italian Gardens. Send us a tweet if you visit one of them.
Its a time of the year when we can slow down and prehaps visit gardens that are not just off the motorway.
The first place I would suggest is up in the mountains in the Trentino Alto Adige area. A group of artists have developed a centre for artists that use nature for their works of art. Indicated for youngsters you can't imagine the fun of descovering the Green Cathedral or the Vegetable Theatre. You need good walking shoes. Quite admirable the team that works on site with artists that come from all over the world. Just a handfull of peolple that do everything on their own, at a very professional level.
Try and hyke up the steep and winding road to visit the Cervara in Liguria. From the Convent you have a magnificent view of the coast line. Quite a privilege at a time of the year when Portofino is overcrowded.
Thumbs up for the Italian Minister for Culture that organized a meeting for the first time ever with Ministers for Culture from all over the world. Finally at Expo there was food for thought! All sorts of things are changing in Italy. People moan and groan less and participate in giving a hand in mantaining the historical and artistic heritage of Italy. Apart form FAI (the Italian National Trust) that has been there for several decades, Gasmann (an Italian actor) has started off an appeal in Rome asking citizens to help clean up the city that is invaded by millions of tourists every year. The appeal 'iosonoromano' is growing in consensus every day on line. A very fine Italian Gardening magazine 'Gardenia' is backing a petition for tax reduction for people who invest in garden up keep.
Have a super holiday and just check up on our secret garden section where you can find gardens that are off the tourist track.
