History

Palazzo Moroni, erected in the mid-17th century in Città Alta, Bergamo, along the ancient street of Porta Dipinta. Concealed behind its sober façade is a monumental court of honor, adorned with a nymphaeum featuring a Neptune statue embedded in a formidable wall that supports the terraced italian gardens.

Contrary to the façade, the interiors of the palace exude a decorous Baroque exuberance. Palazzo Moroni houses numerous treasures to be discovered within its walls: from splendid Baroque frescoes to refined 19th-century furnishings, precious paintings, porcelain, Chinese amphorae, masterpieces of cabinetmaking, and curious artifacts.
The italian gardens of Palazzo Moroni unfold across terraces connected by staircases, embellished with flower beds bordered with ivy and meticulously trimmed boxwood bushes, arranged in geometric patterns, and filled with yellow and red flowers, representing the distinctive colors of the city of Bergamo. The third and highest terrace grants access to the ''Count's Retreat,'' a neo-medieval turret constructed at the end of the 19th century upon the remnants of an older structure associated with the Civic Fortress.

A notable feature of the palace is its preservation, extending beyond the garden to a two-and-a-half-hectare vegetable garden—a productive plot established to meet the palace's needs. Annexed to the property between the 17th and 19th centuries, thanks to the efforts of brothers Pietro (1792-1858) and Alessandro Moroni (1790-1869), the latter being an agronomy scholar. A curious and valuable corner of Lombard countryside that remains pristine, akin to an urban oasis of biodiversity, gradually reinvigorating with local fauna, from avian species to badgers.
Since 2020, it has been under the stewardship of the FAI (Italian National Trust), committed to its maintenance and enhancement through a variety of cultural initiatives.
