From December 19 Adriana Villa in Tivoli is hosting the exhibition Sotto il segno del Capricorno. La pittura in etą adrianea (Under the Sign of Capricorn. Painting in the Age of Hadrian). The exhibition, which can be visited until May 4, investigates the state of the art of mural painting from the Hadrianic period (117-138 AD) within the imperial residence.
On display in the rooms of the Mouseia are some of the more than five hundred pictorial fragments, the discovery of which in the area of the so-called Gymnasium has added an important piece of knowledge on the little-investigated subject of painting at Villa Adriana. Enriching the exhibition are presented for the first time the frescoes from the area of the so-called Macchiozzo, after a delicate restoration. Also, on the occasion of the exhibition, it is possible to visit the rooms usually closed to the public of the western substructures of the Canopus, where the vaults are decorated with polychrome frescoes with plant compositions and zoomorphic motifs, which inspire the title of the exhibition. The same rooms display some wall paintings detached in the 1970s from the decoration of the barrel vault of the Serapeum.
Organized by the Autonomous Institute of Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este - VILLĘ and curated by Director Andrea Bruciati with Veronica Fondi, restorer and conservator of the Institute, the exhibition emphasizes the latest valuable discoveries of painted plasterwork, for the first time in dialogue with the best-known pictorial evidence of the Tiburtine complex still in situ.
