History

Castello Benelli is located in Bordonchio, a strategic place since the Roman era for the presence of the main caravan routes in front of the sea as via Pompilia and via Flaminia. Not far from the ancient church dedicated to San Martino there is Castello Benelli.
The castle is identified by the historian Luigi Tonini as one of the oldest ''castra'' attestations as it is indicated by the Bavarian Code that lists the assets of the Ravenna Church. In addition, its presence is recorded in various scrolls and cadastral maps from the 10th century.
The structure that we admire today was initially a hunting lodge, which also provided the Malatesta family during the early Middle Ages. It was then remodelled several times until a complete reconstruction in the second half of the nineteenth century by the noble Rimini family Spina. Castello Benelli was finally bought in 1917 by Sir Ignazio Benelli.
Thanks to the Benelli property today we can admire the furniture and interior decorations of the nineteenth century and, after several years of restoration, it has been reopened to the public. The building's interior is the embodiment of an iconographic dream, with allusions to natural features and medieval reminiscences given expression in a decorative system that characterises and envelops every space of the building.
Finally, Castello Benelli allows you to preserve the concept of the garden-countryside through ancient maritime pines stand together with huge plane trees, elms and slender cypresses. Here flower lovers can also admire scented jasmine and above all a wide variety of roses ranging from variegated blooms of Bologna to the elegant Pierre de Ronsard. The open space develops into a garden on the edge of agricultural land that lead visually to the manor house in harmony with a concept of visual and natural continuity.
