The Lazzago estate is located in a strategic position, just outside the town of Como, and represents a fragment of the Como landscape that has remained almost intact up to the present day: a great naturalistic setting, in which humid environments and large open meadows alternate with woods and monumental rows of plants, vegetable constructions, old bird-catching places, historical buildings and panoramic spots overlooking the Lazzago plain or offering picturesque views.
The heart of the estate is the tiny old village, which comprises the historic centre of Lazzago, the 17th century villa with its own garden, the noble chapel, the old guest quarters and appurtenance.
The villa’s garden still has part of the old baroque structure, divided into sections displaying different themes (preserving the beautiful baroque gates that frame the southern façade of the building), with the long lookout that sights the 17th century nymphaeum cave, the Italian-style garden, the front yard with its quatrefoil pond and the long walk.
Alongside this structure, the English-style garden developed as from the 19th century over the area degrading westward and displays monumental groups of Cedrus deodara, Cedrus atlantica, Sequoiadendrum giganteum, Abies normanniana, Picea abies and other precious conifers; it is crossed by intertwining paths, created according to the typical precepts of a Romantic period garden.
The villa’s garden also contains other points of interest, such as an old ice-house (Nevera), with decorations in white and dark lava stone, surrounded by a shell of ancient plane-trees and hornbeams, created to shade it.
Outside this context, the large nature park extends, with the old bird-catching places called Roccolo Mirari, Roccolo del Noà, and uccellanda di Prato Fieno, the productive orchard and the woods.
The estate, which was once owned by the Erba Odescalchi family (and which had among its famous gests Pope Innocent X Erba Odescalchi himself), in 1836 became the property of the Giulini family from Giulino, which still attends to it.
